BIOGRAPHY
Lyric baritone, Chancelor Barbaree, was born in Guymon, OK, but spent much of his adolescence in Amarillo, TX. Here, he received a degree in Music from Amarillo College under the teachings of internationally acclaimed soprano, Mary Jane Johnson. In 2020, Chancelor earned his Bachelor of Musical Arts from the University of Oklahoma. Chancelor received his first taste of opera with the Amarillo Opera where he perfected his first solo operatic role of Frederick in Joshua's Boots. He has gone on to perform in other roles such as Friar Unulfo in Rodelinda and Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos with the Trentino Music Festival. Chancelor has sung the baritone solo in Puccini's Messa di Gloria with the Trentino Musical Festival and Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs with the Oklahoma Master Chorale. Chancelor’s 2022-2023 season saw role debuts of Fiorello in il Barbiere di Siviglia and Marullo in Rigoletto, both with the Amarillo Opera. In the summer of 2023, Chancelor joined Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as a Gerdine Young Artist where he covered Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Elder McLean in Susannah, and Sciarrone in Tosca. In his 2023-2024 season, he will perform his first Messiah and will return to Amarillo Opera to sing Marco in Gianni Schicchi.
